Room to Grow...

Spring Fling Exhibition Space

Friday saw me travelling down to Dumfries and Galloway with my mum for my first ever meeting for this years Spring Fling. Meeting my mentor Morag Macphearson and Spring Fling Manager Leah Black for the first time in Gatehouse of Fleet. After a coffee and a chat we all headed over for a VIP visit to The Mill on the Fleet (currently shut for the winter season) to view my exhibition space during the Spring Fling as one of the young artists in early June...

Pictures from Friday

This exhibition space which I have visited many times over the years is amazing in both size and location. And I think having my exhibition in a beautiful old mill will hopefully add interest to my exhibition and really ties in with my work...

Goal by June: FILL THIS SPACE!

4 years in the making...

My Graduate Collection June 2011

My final year work is inspired by pattern and details found in architecture from BarcelonaDesign, innovation and colour theory are what drives me and my work, always producing strong drawing research at the beginning of any projects, so my design work always comes from a very personal view point...

Research Photographs

A key concept of my collection was bringing together multiple woven structures and bold colours in the one scarf piece to reflect my research drawings and colour research. Another key factor in my development of my final collection, was bringing together contrasting patterns within a single scarf piece. With the idea of 'opposites attract' always being the basis of my work, and this I hope brings a fresh look to woven textiles...

Ae Fond Kiss...

New Job

This week saw me becoming the new girl as I started my new job at Turnberry Carpets on Monday, going to be developing, manufacturing and finishing a new hand woven rug/wall hanging, bringing new design practise to a company that uses the hand tufting method of rug manufacture.

I wanted to share with you all this beautiful piece of work that was produced by the company last year for Timorous Beasties and is now hanging in the National Trust for Scotland’s Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway. The wall hanging measures 21ft by 8ft and took 300 hours to make...

'Ae Fond Kiss' picture take when still unfinished back in October 2011 By Chris Jame

The Design includes references to many of Robert Burns’ works. Ae Fond Kiss, Death and Dr Hornbrook, and To a Mouse are all in the design, which also includes contemporary visual references. It is like no rug I have ever seen, such beautiful Scottish images, its like a Burn's fairy tale....

Image printed in The Herald Oct 19th 2011 of the finishing process

So I'm now gonna be working with Turnberry Carpets Monday-Thursday and then working on the Spring Fling project on my days off- gonna be busy! (but I like it that way.)

(141) Days of Spring...

Young Artists Mentoring Programme

The Spring Fling is the most amazing open studio event that takes place every year, with artists and makers opening their studio doors across Dumfries and Galloway to the public. This year being a very special year for SF, with it being its 10th Birthday and is celebrating with a number of events, the first being the Young Artists Mentoring Programme...

After finding out near the end of last year that I was chosen as one of the two young artist for the mentoring programme, I can't be more HAPPY! Not only was I gaining the funding and support I needed to carry on with my textiles work since leaving The Glasgow School of Art in June, I now have the platform to showcase my work again, which is so exciting.

Before you could even applied to the programme you had to be under 25, be a recent Art School graduate and have a connection to Dumfries and Galloway. My connection being D&G holds so many memories for me, with it being my holiday home since I was only a few weeks old. Both sides of my family own caravans across the path from each other (my lovely mum and dad met there) at Cardoness Caravan Park five minutes drive away from Gatehouse of Fleet.

Caravan Times...
Young Artists Mentoring Programme will give me free entry and a studio for the Spring Fling event taking place in early June, a bursary to produce new work and 14 days with my mentor, Morag Macpherson.

Exciting times from now until June...

Spring Back Fall Forward...

              Hello
My name Coral Beattie and I am a woven textiles graduate of The Glasgow School. 2011 saw me finishing my degree and along with my fellow students graduating from GSA into the big scary world...Over 6 months has past since then and finally I think I have found my feet again.

2012 has only just started by lots of exciting planned and this is why I have started this blog. I have been given a bursary from the Dumfries and Galloway Arts and Crafts Event Spring Fling, as part of their young artist programme. So I really wish to make the most of this experience over the 6 months and document everything! From what I make to who I meet along the way I hope to post...so MadeByCoral will become my little online diary of my adventures through the world of craft and design.
