Break...

 D&G Time

At the start of this week I spent two nights in Dumfries and Galloway to see a few things and spend some mentoring time with Morag Macphearson. This weeks sees the start of my two week break before starting my new job, so I'm 100% focused on my Spring Fling work and getting all my woven work finished...

Monday- Galashields, Heriot Watt Uni Campus visit- to check out their textile department and what would be available for me to use, and also find out about borrowing a loom from them for my exhibition.

-then stopped at Gracefields art centre in Dumfries to look at the textiles exhibition on show there at the moment. Also took a few snaps of  some interesting pieces from the exhibition, fell in love with this felted wall hanging...

Tuesday- Trip to the Mill on the Fleet in Gatehouse to get a little more inspiration  ahead of my exhibition.

-Then off to Morag studio in Kirkcudbright to plan the final fews weeks before Spring Fling.Really not long to go now(less than 5 weeks) but really not feeling stressed, just enjoying it all now. Took some pictures around The Mill on the Fleet, its such a lovely place...

Dream....

Alex Begg & Co

So as I hinted at in last weeks blog post I have BIG news to tell you all...So my life has taken another crazy turn, just had my last day at Turnberry Carpets, I tried my best but it just wasn't for me. I just felt that after working so hard  for pretty much 6 years (one year getting into Art School, 4 years at GSA and the year since leaving) and giving up so much that the job at Turnberry just wasn't enough for me in terms of design work.

It also was taking me too far away from my true love of woven textiles, finding myself starting a 5.30am day, working all day and then weaving at night to fill this need! Which is fine for short periods but not for the long term.

But the amazing news is, I have landed myself my dream job with the woven textiles company Alex Begg & Co in Ayr. Right Now its a year long paid graduate placement where I will be joining their small but amazing in house design team...

But I have to say I now owe so such to the Spring Fling as without the Bursary from them I wouldn't have been able to produce new work, and then a much stronger portfolio to show at Alex Begg.

Another bit of good news is that I have a 2 week break before starting my new job, so its all about finishing up my weaving and starting all my sewing for the exhibition...

One For The Boys...

Menswear Ideas

So when it comes to producing pieces within my statement scarf collection I felt i just couldn't leave out the lovely boys or maybe the ladies who like the darker side of life. So I know not every man has that wacky and daring dress sense as the Johnny Depp types of the world, so I wanted to bring a little something for everyone to the collection...

So starting out with this beautiful dark grey 60/2 silk as my warp, making it 8 metres in length. This length always causes a few problems with us having to move the kitchen table so i can stretch the warp along the hall, but needs must!

Interesting images of each individual thread after i have pulled them through each individual heddle...

So for these pieces I still wanted these designs to fit in with the rest of the collection but also to stand out in their own right, but I have taken away the pattern and colour clashes that can be seen in my other designs and produced designs that maybe fit in better with the menswear side of the market...

just a cheeky wee look...need to wait for Spring Fling starting June 2nd for more...
